Information on the practical artistic examinations

The following practical artistic examinations must be taken in the diploma course: Second semester examination, intermediate diploma examination, diploma examination.

Time and purpose of the audits, structure of the audits

    • The second semester examination marks the end of the two-semester orientation course in the Diploma in Fine Arts in the basic class. The second semester examination consists of two parts: Part 1: At the end of the second semester, the candidate presents a selection of his or her study work from the basic class. Part 2: In a 10-minute examination interview, candidates are given the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to reflect on their own artistic activity on the basis of the work presented.
    • The intermediate diploma examination marks the end of the foundation course. It usually takes place after the courses of the 4th semester. The examination is intended to determine whether the candidate has acquired the ability to continue their studies in the main degree program. The examination consists of an assessment of the presentation of artistic works that the candidates have produced during their studies to date.
    • The diploma examination includes your diploma thesis and marks the end of your studies. It usually takes place in the 9th semester. It takes up to six months to complete the thesis. Please discuss your plans with your class supervisor in good time and then hand in the completed “Application for the topic of the thesis” to the study office. Ideally, this should be done at the end of the previous semester and marks the start of your diploma thesis; you should inform the Academic Office informally of the date of the examination and the final selection of the members of the examination committee (3 examiners, at least 2 class supervisors) up to 6 weeks before the examination date. Your registration for the diploma examination (submission of the application for admission) must be made no later than three weeks before the examination date. Further information can be found below in the “HANDBOOK Diploma Thesis and Diploma Examination” and in the Examination Regulations (PO).
    • Examination dates and deadlines, examination board, the second semester examination usually takes place on the Tuesday of the last week of the lecture period. The date of the examination as well as the members of the examination board, which consists of the heads of the basic class and four other artistic subject class heads, will be announced to the candidates approx. 6 weeks before the examination date by the study office of the University of Art and Design by e-mail (APPLICATION for admission to the examination see below). The examination date of the intermediate diploma or diploma examination and the members of the examination board must be communicated informally to the Office of Student Affairs up to six weeks before the examination date. The examiners for the intermediate diploma examination and diploma examination are usually proposed by the candidates themselves; exceptions are regulated by the examination board. Discussions with the respective examiners should be sought in good time; ideally up to ½ year before the examinations. The examination board sets the examination period for the diploma examination per semester as the last three weeks of the lecture period in which the examinations and the associated work presentations are to take place; in exceptional cases, the examination board may decide to hold examinations outside this period upon request. Registration for the respective examinations must be made by submitting an application form to the Academic Office at least three weeks before the examination date. Please note that different versions of the examination regulations exist – depending on when the degree program was started – and the application forms differ accordingly. The version that was current at the time of enrollment applies (see below for the application for admission to the examination). The required certificates of achievement must be submitted in accordance with the examination regulations applicable to you. Admission to the examination may be refused if the documents are incomplete or the application is not received by the deadline.
