The Apollo was created from a former pharmacy and the historic Ollhof, which is now a central location for contemporary art.
The Kunsthochschule Mainz promotes not only art and teaching, but also dialogue with the public. The Apollo makes this aspiration permanently visible: an exhibition space in the Neustadt district of Mainz builds an open bridge to the academy.
Following a temporary solution in an empty pharmacy, the Ollhof, with its 1895 courtyard, provides the perfect setting for a cultural quarter. The former garages have been converted into an exhibition space with generous display windows. Behind these is a 90-square-metre exhibition space flooded with light. A multifunctional event space in the former boiler room complements the offerings for films, installations and seminars.
The exhibitions are designed to be viewed from the outside — a deliberate choice that challenges artists to adapt their work to this unique spatial situation. This space sets high standards while offering unique presentation opportunities.
As an innovative exhibition space, the Apollo will host up to six exhibitions per year. A jury selects the projects, giving special consideration to student applications. Works by alumni, professors, and partner institutions will also be presented.
The new cultural quarter visibly and permanently connects the art college with the city of Mainz, shining as a platform for artistic experimentation that reaches beyond the region.
