Introductory information

The Media Lab is a central workspace for digital and media-based artistic practice. Students gain in-depth knowledge of current digital technologies here and develop their own artistic expression in areas such as image, video, interactive systems and generative media. Alongside a continuous programme of courses, personalised technical and media consultancy is an integral part of working in the Media Lab.

Artistic approaches

The Media Lab teaches and tests various digital production methods in practice. These include digital image processing and non-linear video editing, as well as generative and process-based design. Students work with software environments for image and video editing, as well as programming tools for interactive or generative media. Additionally, approaches from the field of physical computing enable the connection of digital systems with sensory or spatial installations. The workshop leaders guide these processes through one-to-one coaching and support the development of technical and conceptual solutions for artistic projects.

Equipment and infrastructure

The Media Lab is equipped with high-performance workstations featuring the latest software for image and video editing, 3D design, and media production. Large-format fine-art printing systems, A3 Risograph printers and 3D printing and scanning technology are also available. The media lending service provides additional production equipment, including mirrorless system cameras, 4K video cameras, audio recorders, mobile projectors, displays, and speaker systems, for use in media projects.

Use during studies

During opening hours, the Media Lab is open to all students for independent use. It can be used for both the realisation of independent artistic projects and the technical development of student projects. As well as practical work on individual projects, the lab offers space for experimental methods, interdisciplinary collaboration and in-depth engagement with digital media in contemporary artistic practice.
