Introductory information

The Painting and Materials Workshop provides training in the technical and theoretical fundamentals of painting, from the properties of materials to their correct application. It is a place of learning and practice for anyone who wishes to understand how paint, surface and support interact and integrate this knowledge into their artistic practice.

Artistic Approaches

The focus is on the relationship between the support (e.g. canvas or wood), the binder (the substance that holds the pigments together) and the pigment (the actual colouring agent). Students learn to use these components purposefully and coordinate them with one another. In addition, conservation issues are addressed: How do materials behave over time? Which substances are compatible, and which are not? The curriculum also covers practical aspects such as transport, storage, and suitable hanging systems for finished works.

Facilities and infrastructure

The studio provides workspaces for producing and processing painting materials, as well as for conducting experimental investigations into colour and surface processes. It provides the necessary infrastructure for the safe handling of painting materials and equipment.

Use during studies

The workshop is used as part of workshop courses, which begin at the start of the semester with safety training on handling chemicals. Participation in this introduction is a prerequisite for independent work in the workshop. Students can use the workshop for their own projects and receive expert advice on technical and conservation-related matters.
