Funding Programmes for Students

Erasmus+
Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth, and sport. It enables JGU students to study at one of our partner universities as part of an Erasmus+ study exchange. Students can also receive financial support for an Erasmus+ traineeship (internship).

DAAD
The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) is a publicly funded organisation of German higher education institutions that promotes international academic exchange worldwide. It offers a range of funding opportunities, including specific programmes for art students and graduates.

PROMOS
Scholarships for study abroad periods of up to six months are offered by German universities through the PROMOS programme (“Programme to Increase the Mobility of German Students”), funded by the DAAD. Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz participates in PROMOS and publishes calls for applications for its funding lines. Scholarships are awarded through a competitive, quality-based selection process in accordance with DAAD guidelines. PROMOS scholarships cannot be combined with other funding for the same period abroad. Priority is generally given to study stays outside Europe, particularly those within JGU partnership agreements.

FORTHEM
FORTHEM – Fostering Outreach within European Regions, Transnational Higher Education and Mobility – is an alliance of nine European universities working to enhance mobility for students and staff and to develop new forms of cooperation. Students can apply for short-term mobility programmes within the alliance.

Fulbright
The German-American Fulbright Programme supports, among other things, one- to two-semester study stays in the United States for German students and in Germany for U.S. students.

GERMAN-FRENCH YOUTH OFFICE
The DFJW/OFAJ (German-French Youth Office) awards annual scholarships for study stays in France of up to five months. Applicants are expected to have sufficient knowledge of French.

DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION AND SKILLS – ENGLAND AND WALES
The DfES supports students undertaking full-time studies in England or Wales. Funding may include partial or full coverage of tuition fees, depending on parental income.

For stays in Switzerland, which is not currently participating in the Erasmus+ programme, please use the “Swiss Mobility Programme – Studies” search criterion for study stays or the “Swiss Mobility Programme – Teaching” search criterion for teaching stays under “Programme”.

JGU also has partner universities outside the Erasmus+ programme. You can search without selecting an exchange programme in advance by entering a single search criterion. Please note that it is not possible to search for a partner university without first selecting a country. You must select a destination country before you can choose a partner university in that country.
