At the Kunsthochschule Mainz, students can study on a teacher training programme that leads to Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Master of Education (M.Ed.) degrees. This programme qualifies students for entry onto the state teacher training programme at grammar and comprehensive schools, as well as for roles in art education at museums, exhibitions and cultural institutions. Students can also pursue a doctorate following the M.Ed. programme.

The department encourages students to engage in teaching, research and collaborative enquiry at the intersection of art and education. Three central aspects are explored: art orientation, practical research, and a critical perspective on discrimination. The department collaborates with schools, cultural and educational institutions, as well as self-organised groups and collectives. Students have the opportunity to develop the conceptual foundations of an art education approach through methodological, research-based and theoretical courses. The knowledge and perspectives acquired in this way are then tested, deepened and reflected upon in practical projects. The department’s premises and website also provide resources for self-directed learning.

As the programme is taught entirely in German and involves close collaboration with schools and educational institutions, a strong grasp of the language is essential. Prospective students must demonstrate German proficiency at a minimum B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
