Introductory information

The photography workshop covers basic and advanced skills in photographic shooting and lighting techniques. The programme is designed for students who use photography as an independent artistic medium, as well as those who use it to document works, installations or exhibitions. In addition to shooting techniques, the workshop’s curriculum includes image editing and the presentation of photographic works.

Artistic approaches

Work in the photography workshop covers the entire photographic process, from shooting and digital image processing to presentation in an exhibition context.

The focus is on the conscious use of light and the camera, as well as the post-processing of digital image data. ‘Digital development’, i.e. working with image files in RAW format and processing them in a RAW converter, is an indispensable step in digital photography. Training in the use of relevant software is provided on the computers in the media lab. This is also where you can output digital images on large-format printers. Various methods of presenting photographic work are also taught, including mounting prints for exhibitions and framing with a mount.

Equipment and infrastructure

The technology required for photographic productions is provided through the media lab’s equipment lending service. This includes digital cameras and lenses, camera tripods, and accessories for various applications. Mobile flash systems and a small selection of halogen spotlights complete the range of equipment available. Students can use this equipment for photographic projects and documentation. The organisation and allocation of equipment is handled by the Media Lab and is currently coordinated on an ad hoc basis. To consult on choosing the ‘right’ equipment, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with the workshop director at short notice.

Use during studies

In addition to providing technical support for shooting and image editing, the workshop offers assistance in developing suitable presentation formats for photographic work in the context of exhibitions and student projects. This includes advice on image selection, sequencing and format, as well as practical presentation and print preparation.
