The apollo, a central venue for contemporary art, has emerged from a former pharmacy and the historic Ollhof.

The Kunsthochschule Mainz is committed to fostering art and education and engaging in dialogue with the public. The apollo gives this commitment a permanent and visible form: an exhibition space in the Mainzer Neustadt that establishes an open connection to the Kunsthochschule.

After an interim solution in an empty pharmacy, the Ollhof — with its 1895 courtyard — provides the ideal setting for a cultural quarter. The former garages have been converted into an exhibition space with generous shopfront windows. Behind them lies a 90-square-metre light-filled gallery. The former boiler room has been transformed into a multifunctional events space that can accommodate film screenings, installations, and seminars.

The exhibitions are designed to be viewed from outside, which challenges artists to adapt their work to this distinctive spatial situation. The space sets high standards while offering unique presentation possibilities.

As an innovative exhibition venue, the apollo will present up to six exhibitions per year. A jury selects the projects, giving particular consideration to student applications. Works by alumni, professors, and partner institutions will also be presented.

The new cultural quarter establishes a visible and lasting connection between the Kunsthochschule and the city of Mainz and positions itself as a platform for artistic experimentation with a reach that extends beyond the region.
