Application procedure at the Mainz School of Art for the study program for the Summer Term 2025

Thank you for your interest in studying at the Kunsthochschule Mainz.

The subject Fine Arts is offered in the degree programme Fine Arts (diploma programme) and Fine Arts for Teaching at Grammar Schools (Bachelor/Master of Education). You can apply by 30 April for the winter semester or by 31 October for the summer semester at the Mainz University of Fine Arts.

Passing an aptitude test is a prerequisite for admission to the degree programme in Fine Arts or Fine Arts for Teaching at Grammar Schools.

(after passing the aptitude test): by 15.01.25

Application procedure
After the examination board has reviewed the applications, a selection of applicants will be invited to a 15-minute aptitude test interview in a second examination stage. Invitations will be sent out by e-mail after the applications have been reviewed.

Please note that you can only apply for one degree programme at the Kunsthochschule Mainz at a time.

Please name your files as follows: Last_name_first_name_year_of_study_programme_SoSe_25_a and
• PDF with the Zulassungsantrag, Letter of motivation (written justification for your choice of study programme), curriculum vitae in tabular form with photo, copy of your last school-leaving certificate (school/training/study) and any other documents. Please name your files as follows: Last_name_first_name_year_of_birth_programme_SoSe_25_b

Please note:
• Time-based works (film, sound, documentation of performative works) can be attached: up to 10 minutes from a selection of a maximum of 3 time-based works. Maximum file size 300 MB
Label the file with the time-based works according to the following pattern (name, year of birth): John-Doe-2001_khs-mainz_2021.xyz.
• Your work cannot be considered if it is not labelled as specified.

Upload link for teacher applicants only for video files, no portfolios etc.

Oral aptitude test
• The examination venue is the Kunsthochschule Mainz at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
• The following documents must be brought along or sent to the Kunsthochschule one week before the interview date:
• Original application documents (CV, copies of certificates …) as well as the original portfolio with artistic works.
• In the portfolio, you can deal with all artistic genres (drawing, painting, printmaking, film/video, photography, sculpture or performance) or also set an artistic focus of your choice. The portfolio of original works can be supplemented by photographic documentation of works that are not transportable or are larger than the permitted portfolio format (up to DIN A0).
• Applicants are not entitled to take the oral examination in the form of a video conference; however, exceptions are possible on request, especially for applicants from non-EU countries and abroad.
• The outside labelling of the folder must contain the following information: Surname, first name, address and desired degree programme. Alternatively, the present Mappenaufkleber be used. Please use commercially available folders up to DIN A0 format (no wooden crates, cardboard boxes or similar, no rolls, no framed or stretched pictures).
