The Academy of Fine Arts Mainz is the only art academy in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is an internationally oriented, artistic and academic institution with the right to award doctorates and is integrated into the Johannes Gutenberg University.

The Academy of Fine Arts offers courses in Fine Arts (Diplom/Meisterschüler*innen) and Art Education (Bachelor and Master of Education). Currently, 180 students are enrolled in the Fine Arts and Art Education programmes, spread over 11 classes covering the entire spectrum of contemporary art from painting, sculpture and drawing to photography, film and media art. The academy is known for its concentration on artistic subjects, its high level of collegiality and flexibility, as well as for its fostering of cross-genre collaborations.
