Profile Visual Theory / Art Theory
The Art Theory courses are designed for students specialising in the fine arts and teaching. They provide a multifaceted insight into the fields of art theory and history, visual cultures and aesthetics. Topics include current art discourses and the analysis of historical and social developments in artistic and media practices. The aim is a canon-critical and Eurocentric reflection on the research material, its historical situation, methodological approaches and theoretical contexts.
Interdisciplinary references to media studies and philosophy, gender studies and postcolonial studies, as well as an orientation towards current social and political issues, link the teaching and research areas.
Teaching focuses on modernism from 1800 to the present, with specific reference to the history of art, culture and the media in the modern period and inter/transcultural references.
In addition to seminars and lectures, lecturers in art theory organise excursions, workshops and conferences. The range of courses on offer is complemented by art history courses at the Institute of Art History and Musicology at JGU, with which there is cooperation. There is the possibility of a doctorate (Dr. phil.).
