He was born in Münster in 1957. From 1978 to 1986, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Münster. In 1997, he was a visiting professor at the University of the Arts in Bremen. From 1997 to 2003, he was a professor of media art at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. From 2004 to 2005, he was an acting professor of artistic photography at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Since 2005, he has been a professor at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts, part of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. From 2014 to 2017, he served as the academy’s rector.
