• Information on the practical artistic examinations

The following practical artistic examinations must be taken as part of the diploma programme: the second-semester examination, the preliminary diploma examination and the diploma examination.

Timing and purpose of examinations, structure of examinations

    • The second semester examination marks the end of the two-semester introductory course for the Bachelor of Fine Arts programme. The second-semester examination consists of two parts. Part 1: At the end of the second semester, candidates submit a selection of their coursework from the basic class. Part 2 involves a 10-minute interview in which candidates demonstrate their ability to reflect on their artistic work.
    • The preliminary diploma examination marks the end of the basic study period. It usually takes place after the fourth semester’s courses. The examination determines whether candidates have acquired the ability to continue their studies in the main study period. It consists of an evaluation of artistic works produced by the candidates during their studies to date.
    • The diploma examination includes your diploma thesis and marks the end of your studies. It usually takes place in the ninth semester. Please allow up to six months for the processing of your diploma thesis. You should discuss your plans with your class teacher well in advance and then submit the completed ‘Application for the assignment of a diploma thesis topic’ form to the study office. Ideally, this should be done at the end of the previous semester, marking the start of your thesis. Up to six weeks before the examination date, you should inform the Student Office of the examination date and the final selection of members of the examination board (three examiners, at least two class teachers). You must register for the diploma examination (by submitting the application for admission) at least three weeks before the examination date. Further information can be found in the ‘HANDREICHUNG Diplomarbeit und Diplomprüfung’ and in the Examination Regulations (PO).
    • Examination dates and deadlines
Examination board: The second semester examinations usually take place on the Tuesday of the last week of the lecture period. The examination date and members of the examination board (consisting of the heads of the basic classes and four other artistic class teachers) will be announced to candidates by email by the art college’s study office approximately six weeks before the examination date. See below for the application for admission to the examination. The examination date and members of the examination board for the preliminary diploma or diploma examination must be communicated to the study office informally up to six weeks before the examination date. Candidates usually propose the examiners for the preliminary diploma and diploma examinations themselves; exceptions are regulated by the examination board. Candidates should therefore seek to arrange a meeting with their chosen examiners well in advance, ideally around six months before the examinations. The examination board sets the diploma examination period per semester as the last three weeks of the lecture period, during which the examinations and associated work presentations are to take place. In exceptional cases, the examination board may, at its discretion, allow examinations to take place outside this period. Registration for the respective examinations must be submitted to the Student Office using the application form at least three weeks before the examination date. Please note that depending on when you started your studies, there are different versions of the examination regulations and the application forms differ accordingly. The version in force at the time of enrolment applies (see below for the application for admission to the examination). You must submit the required proof of academic achievement in accordance with the applicable examination regulations. Admission to the examination may be refused if documents are incomplete or if applications are not received by the deadline.
    • For information on the admission requirements for the respective examinations and the admission procedure, please refer to the regulations governing the diploma examination for the Fine Arts programme at Mainz University of Art. Ordnung der Diplomprüfung für den Studiengang Freie Bildende
